PlantGDB News:

Community-annotated maize gene models (see an example at ZmGDB) are now displayed at both MaizeGDB and maizesequence.org, by means of Distributed Annotation Service (DAS) (November 21, 2009).

Brachypodium distachyon browser: BdGDB, a genome browser for the model grass species Brachypodium distachyon, is now available, based on the JGI v1.0 8x genome assembly. The assembly displayed comprises 271.15 Mb arranged in 5 pseudochromosomes. Display includes gene models, splice-aligned EST, cDNA, PUT assembly and Arabidopsis and rice predicted proteins (October 30, 2009).

Volker Brendel - Position Responsibility Statement (Jan., 2009)

Volker Brendel, Bergdahl Professor of Bioinformatics in the Department of Genetics, Development and Cell Biology (and, by courtesy, Department of Statistics) at Iowa State University, is expected to contribute to the mission of the department and the university in research, teaching, and service and outreach. His primary responsibility is to maintain an internationally recognized research program in the area of bioinformatics and computational molecular biology. This responsibility is to be dispensed by regular publication of research results in peer-reviewed journal articles, participation in seminars and conferences relevant to the field, and vigorous pursuit of extramural funding for the research program.

Brendel's teaching responsibilities consist of teaching the BCB 568 Bioinformatics II. Advanced Genome Informatics core course of the interdepartmental graduate program in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology once per year, contributions to the development of an undergraduate curriculum in bioinformatics, directing graduate student research, and active involvement in curriculum development, master's and doctoral Program of Study (POS) committees, and other administrative tasks. In addition, he will also serve on the faculty of the 2009 ISU Computational and Systems Biology Summer Institute.

Brendel's service and outreach responsibilities include participation in faculty meetings, departmental and university committees, assistance to the interdepartmental programs in bioinformatics and computational biology and in genetics, and representation of his area of expertise to the people of Iowa and the general public.
